Earl Grey – A classic tea with rich history
Earl Grey is one of the most recognized teas in the world. A bold, full-bodied black tea infused with essential oils from the peel of bergamot—a Mediterranean citrus fruit that gives this blend its signature aroma and flavor. This unique fruit offers a floral taste, reminiscent of a mix between orange and lemon, with hints of lime and grapefruit.
The History of Earl Grey Tea
Flavored and scented teas trace their origins back to China during the Tang Dynasty (618–907). At that time, tea makers would press fresh leaves to create a concentrated tea, which they then enhanced by mixing in herbs to intensify the aroma. Later on, flowers and spices were added. During the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644), blends of jasmine and osmanthus teas emerged, introducing new and refined flavors.
When it comes to the origin of Earl Grey tea, several theories circulate. Most agree that the tea was named after a British nobleman, Sir Charles Grey, who also served as Prime Minister in the 19th century.
One popular legend suggests that Earl Grey once saved the life of a Chinese man who was fond of creating unique tea blends. As a token of gratitude, he gifted Grey a special bergamot-infused black tea blend—thus giving birth to what we now know as Earl Grey, one of the most iconic and beloved classic English teas in the world.
